🚨 2021 Ford Bronco: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Ford Bronco uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with shift-by-wire technology and electronic park lock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is set and wheels are chocked
- Attempt to jump-start the vehicle or connect a battery booster pack to provide 12V power - the electronic shifter requires power to function
- With power restored, turn ignition to ON (press start button without pressing brake)
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shifter button and move shifter to Neutral
- If shifter still will not release from Park, locate the shift lock override access - on the right side of the shifter housing, look for a small cap or cover near the base of the shifter console
- Remove the override cap using a flathead screwdriver or by prying with your fingernail
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward Neutral
- If no power can be provided and override does not mechanically release the transmission, the vehicle must be flatbedded - do not attempt to tow with wheels on ground
Shift-lock override location
Right side of center console shifter housing near the base - small capped slot, but exact position varies slightly by trim level
With zero electrical power
The 2021 Bronco's electronic shifter heavily relies on 12V power. If battery is completely dead and cannot be jumped, the shift lock override may allow mechanical release to Neutral, but this is not guaranteed on all units. If the override slot does not successfully release the transmission into Neutral with zero power, the vehicle MUST be flatbedded. Do not force the shifter as this can damage the shift-by-wire actuator.
