🚨 2022 Ford Bronco: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 Bronco uses a traditional console-mounted PRNDM lever shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position if battery power is available (do not start engine).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a protective rubber cap, located on the left side of the shifter base near the console trim.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to remove the rubber cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the tool down in the override slot, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If no brake pressure or the shifter still won't move, keep firm downward pressure on the override tool and physically pull the shifter toward Neutral.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely—have someone ready to control movement or use wheel chocks.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the override slot still functions mechanically. Insert the tool into the override slot and apply firm downward pressure while moving the shifter—you may need more force without power assist. The steering wheel will be locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels off the ground or towed with a wheel dolly.
