🚨 2006 Ford E-150: Emergency Neutral

The 2006 E-150 uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with an electronic shift interlock that prevents movement from Park without brake pedal application.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with parking brake firmly applied and wheels chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override access - it is a small rectangular slot or covered opening on the left side of the column shroud near the base of the shifter
  4. Remove the small plastic cover cap if present by prying gently with a flat-blade screwdriver
  5. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly downward or toward the column while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shift lever toward Neutral
  6. If successful, the shifter will release and you can move it to Neutral
  7. Keep the tool depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
With complete loss of 12V power, the override slot becomes critical. You will NOT be able to use electronic methods. The mechanical override must be used - insert the tool into the override slot and apply firm pressure while manipulating the shifter. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to jump-start the vehicle momentarily to unlock the steering column, then use the override. In extreme cases where the override is inaccessible or non-functional, the shifter cable can be manually disconnected at the transmission (requires crawling under vehicle), then the transmission manual lever moved to Neutral.
