⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if the battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the column shroud near the base of the shifter—it is typically a small rectangular opening covered by a rubber cap or plastic cover on the right side of the column near where the shifter lever exits.
- Remove the cover or cap from the override slot.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the brake pedal does not help or there is no power, keep the override depressed and manually pull the shifter toward Neutral with steady force.
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cover.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. Insert the tool into the override slot and hold it down while moving the shifter. The ignition does not need to be powered for the mechanical override to work.
