🚨 2024 Ford E-Transit: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 E-Transit uses a console-mounted rotary dial e-shifter similar to other Ford EVs, located on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock all wheels securely
  2. If 12V power is available: Turn the e-shifter dial to the ON position (do not press brake)
  3. Locate the shift lock override: it is a small rectangular slot with a removable cap located to the lower right of the rotary shifter dial on the console
  4. Remove the cap by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, rotate the shifter dial counterclockwise to N (Neutral)
  7. The vehicle can now roll freely - maintain constant control
  8. Replace the override cap when done

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. Use a jump pack or jumper cables to provide temporary 12V power to energize the shifter system if the mechanical override does not release the shifter. The high-voltage EV battery being charged/discharged does not affect the 12V shifter lock system.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: E-Transit must be transported on a flatbed truck only - NEVER tow with any wheels on the ground. The electric motor remains mechanically connected to the drive wheels even in Neutral, and towing will cause severe damage to the drive unit and potentially create a dangerous electrical fault. If the 12V battery is dead and you cannot engage Neutral, the vehicle must be winched onto the flatbed with wheels locked.
