🚨 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2005 Escape Hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with a button on the front of the shifter knob.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (or ACC if battery is weak) - do NOT need to start the engine
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small rectangular or square cap on the console to the left side of the shifter base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the override cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to N (Neutral)
- If there is absolutely no electrical power and you cannot turn the key to ON, you must jump-start the 12V battery first to enable the shift lock override mechanism
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override requires at least ACC power from the ignition. With a completely dead 12V battery, jump-start the vehicle or replace the battery to get accessory power. The key must turn to at least the ACC position for the override to function. Without any power, loading onto a flatbed is the only option.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: Even in Neutral, do NOT tow this hybrid with all four wheels on the ground for extended distances. The electric motor is mechanically connected to the drivetrain and can be damaged by extended towing. For any towing beyond emergency repositioning (under 1 mile at under 5 mph), use a flatbed or tow with the FRONT wheels raised on a dolly. The 12V auxiliary battery (not the high-voltage hybrid battery) is what powers the shift lock - it is located in the rear cargo area under the floor.
