🚨 2021 Ford Escape: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Escape Hybrid uses an electronic rotary gear selector dial or monostable shifter (varies by trim) with no mechanical linkage to the transmission.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake and chock the wheels.
- Attempt to start or turn on the vehicle if any 12V power remains—the hybrid system may allow limited electronic shifting even with a weak 12V battery if the high-voltage battery is intact.
- If the vehicle powers on, rotate the gear selector to Neutral or press the Neutral button (depending on shifter style).
- If there is absolutely no 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function and the transmission cannot be electronically commanded to Neutral.
- In a complete power-loss scenario, the vehicle MUST be loaded onto a flatbed with all wheels off the ground—do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground.
- If you need to roll the vehicle a very short distance (e.g., a few feet to position for flatbed loading), consult the owner's manual for the specific procedure to manually release the parking brake and push—this is NOT the same as shifting to Neutral.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, there is no mechanical shift lock override—the transmission relies entirely on electronic control. The vehicle cannot be shifted into Neutral without power. A jump start or temporary 12V power source is required to shift electronically. If that is not possible, flatbed towing only.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: Do NOT attempt to tow this vehicle with any wheels on the ground if the transmission is not in Neutral. The electric drive motors and transmission can be severely damaged. Always use a flatbed. If attempting to shift electronically, ensure the high-voltage system is not faulted—some hybrid faults may prevent Neutral selection even with 12V power present.
