🚨 2024 Ford Escape: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 Escape Hybrid uses an electronic rotary gear selector dial on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- If the 12V battery has any charge, press the engine start button without pressing the brake pedal to get accessory power
- Locate the shift lock override: it is a small square or rectangular cap directly forward of the rotary shifter dial, integrated into the console trim
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock override cap
- Press and hold the override button inside while rotating the dial to N (Neutral)
- If there is absolutely no electrical power, the electronic shifter cannot be mechanically overridden - you must jump-start the 12V battery to access at least accessory power to enable the override
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed with the front wheels on the ground for SHORT distances only (see owner's manual for limits)

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic rotary shifter is completely inoperative. You MUST restore at least accessory power via jump-start or battery replacement to use the shift lock override. Without any power, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels OFF the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CRITICAL: Even in Neutral, do NOT tow this hybrid with front wheels on the ground for extended distances or at highway speeds. The electric drive motors are mechanically connected to the front wheels and can be damaged. For towing beyond emergency repositioning (under 1 mile at under 5 mph), use a flatbed or tow dolly with FRONT wheels raised. Consult the owner's manual for the specific towing distance/speed limits.
