🚨 2022 Ford Explorer: Emergency Neutral
The 2022 Explorer Hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted PRNDL shifter lever with electronic shift-by-wire and a mechanical shift lock override.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ON/RUN position if 12V power is available (press START button twice without brake pedal).
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular or circular access hole on the console to the right side of the shifter base, typically covered by a small rubber cap or plastic cover.
- Remove the cap by prying gently with a flat tool or your fingernail.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to NEUTRAL.
- If no brake function, continue holding override down and pull/push the shifter to NEUTRAL position.
- The shifter should release and move to N - you may feel a click or release.
- Once in NEUTRAL, remove the tool and verify the gear indicator shows N if display is powered.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock override will still function mechanically. Insert tool into override slot and press down while manipulating shifter to NEUTRAL. The electronic parking brake will remain engaged with no power - wheel chocking is critical. You may need to manually release the EPB using the emergency release procedure (separate from shifter) or accept that wheels are locked for flatbed loading.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: The Explorer Hybrid has both a high-voltage battery system and conventional 12V system. With 12V power dead, the hybrid system is inert and safe. However, if the vehicle has any charge and is shifted to NEUTRAL for towing, ONLY flatbed tow - never dolly or wheels-down tow a hybrid Explorer, as the electric motor/generator is mechanically connected to the drivetrain and will be damaged by wheels-down towing. Ensure tow operator knows this is a HYBRID and requires flatbed only. Do not attempt to put vehicle in a 'tow mode' - none exists for this model.
