The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Locate the shift lock override access—look for a small removable cap or slot near the base of the rotary shifter dial on the console.
- If there is a cap, carefully pry it off with a flat-blade screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while attempting to rotate the dial to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has absolutely no electrical power, the electronic shifter may not release; you may need to access the transmission manually under the vehicle (consult service manual) or prepare for flatbed towing only.
- Once in Neutral with some electrical power, the vehicle can be rolled short distances, but do NOT tow with wheels down—the hybrid transaxle requires lubrication that depends on the hybrid system being operational.

With zero electrical power, the electronic rotary shifter will not function. The shift lock override requires at least minimal 12V power to unlock the transmission.
