⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the 12V battery has some charge; the Lightning has a 12V lithium-ion battery that powers accessories - if completely dead, you may need to jump the 12V system using the remote jump terminals under the hood
- Press the brake pedal (or attempt to if brake-light switch has failed)
- Press the start button without pressing the brake to get the vehicle into Accessory or ON mode
- Move the gear selector to Neutral
- If the electronic shifter will not respond, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rubber cap or cover in the cupholder area forward and to the right of the gear selector base
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or the tool from the cargo area into the override slot and press down while moving the shifter to Neutral
- If attempting to flat-tow or dolly-tow, you MUST also enable Transport Mode (Tow Mode) through the vehicle settings menu, which requires 12V power and the infotainment system to be functional
Shift-lock override location
Small cap or cover in the console area forward and to the right of the shifter base, near the cupholder; exact location may vary slightly by model year
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function at all, and the shift lock override will also not work. You must restore 12V power by jump-starting the 12V battery using the remote terminals under the hood (positive terminal under red cover, negative ground point nearby). The high-voltage battery does not directly help with shifting. Once 12V power is restored, use normal or override procedures.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The F-150 Lightning must ONLY be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. The electric motors are directly connected to the wheels and will generate electricity if the wheels turn, potentially damaging the drive system. Before loading onto a flatbed, enable Transport Mode through Vehicle Settings > Towing > Transport Mode (requires 12V power and functional display). If 12V power cannot be restored, the vehicle must still be flatbedded but extra care must be taken as the parking pawl may remain engaged - consult Ford roadside assistance.
