The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override access - it is a small covered slot on the upper right side of the shifter shroud, just below where the lever pivots
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to remove or pry up the small plastic cover
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral
- If the brake light switch has failed but the battery is good, you may also be able to shift normally by turning the key to ON
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or towed with the transfer case in 2H (for short distances) or with the driveshaft disconnected for flatbed transport

With a completely dead battery, you cannot turn the ignition key to ACC/ON.
