🚨 1990 Ford F-150: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 F-150 uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a mechanical cable linkage to the transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (not START) to unlock the steering column—you do not need the engine running.
  3. Locate the shift lock release: on the steering column, look for a small slot or access hole near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side or underside of the column shroud.
  4. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the shift lock release slot and press or push the release while pulling the shift lever toward you into Neutral.
  5. If the brake pedal feels locked and the shifter won't budge, press the brake pedal firmly while performing the override.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed short distances with the rear wheels on the ground (2WD) or on a flatbed/dolly (4WD).
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or hole near the base of the shift lever on the steering column, usually on the right side or under the column shroud.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, turn the key to ACC to unlock the steering. The shift lock on this generation is primarily mechanical; if the ignition lock cylinder is functional, you can unlock the column manually. If the ignition is seized or the key is lost, you may need to remove the lower column shroud to access the shift cable and manually move the transmission into Neutral at the transmission itself (under the vehicle).
