🚨 1995 Ford F-150: Emergency Neutral

The 1995 F-150 uses a traditional column-mounted gear selector with a mechanical shift interlock button on the side of the lever.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (provides 12V power to release the shift interlock)
  3. Press the brake pedal firmly
  4. Press the shift interlock button on the side of the gear selector and move to Neutral
  5. If the shifter will not move due to failed brake-light switch or no power, locate the shift lock override slot under the plastic shroud at the base of the steering column near the shifter
  6. Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to press down into the override slot while moving the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the column shroud prevents access, you may need to remove the lower steering column cover (typically two screws underneath)
Shift-lock override location
Under the steering column shroud near the base of the shifter mechanism; may require removing lower column cover for access
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical override slot must be used. The override is entirely mechanical and does not require battery power. Remove the lower steering column cover if needed to access the override mechanism at the base of the column shifter.
