🚨 2012 Ford F-250: Emergency Neutral
The 2012 F-250 uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock that prevents movement out of Park without brake pedal depression.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this energizes the shift lock solenoid).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly, then move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not move due to dead battery or failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override - look for a small plastic cap or cover on the upper right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter mechanism.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the override cover.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter out of Park to Neutral.
- If no override slot is accessible on the column, remove the lower steering column cover panels (typically two or three Phillips screws) to access the shift lock mechanism directly.
- With the covers removed, locate the shift lock solenoid (usually a small rectangular component with a plunger) and manually push the plunger to release the shifter.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded.
Shift-lock override location
Small cap on upper right side of steering column shroud near shifter base, or access via removing lower column covers to reach shift lock solenoid directly
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you cannot turn the key to ACC. The shift lock override must be used: remove the override cover near the shifter on the column shroud and press the release while shifting. If no external override is accessible, you must remove the lower steering column covers to manually release the shift lock solenoid plunger.
