🚨 2012 Ford Flex: Emergency Neutral

The 2012 Ford Flex uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON/RUN position if possible (battery weak but not dead); if battery is completely dead, skip to override procedure.
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular or circular opening with a plastic cap, positioned on the right side of the shifter base near the P-R-N-D indicator.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the cap covering the override slot.
  5. Insert a screwdriver, pen, or similar tool firmly into the override slot and press down while simultaneously pulling the shifter button/release and moving the shifter to Neutral.
  6. Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cap.
  7. If the vehicle needs to be moved a distance, keep the ignition in the ON position if possible to allow steering wheel unlock; with no power, steering will be locked and the vehicle must be flatbedded or towed with wheels off the ground.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shifter override slot will still function mechanically to release the shift lock. However, the steering wheel will remain locked. Winch the vehicle onto a flatbed with the front wheels on dollies or suspended. Do not attempt to push or tow conventionally with locked steering.
