⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to the ON/ACC position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small rectangular or circular opening near the shifter base, typically on the right side (passenger side) of the shifter surround, often covered by a small removable cap or plug.
- Use a small flat-head screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the cap if present.
- Insert the screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override pressed, press the shifter button (if equipped) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- Remove the tool and replace the cap; the vehicle can now roll freely in Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Small slot or hole near the base of the center console shifter, typically on the right side of the shifter surround, often covered by a removable cap.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the mechanical shift lock override should still function. Follow the override procedure—no electrical power is needed for the mechanical release. The ignition position does not matter for the override mechanism.
