🚨 2003 Ford Focus: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 Focus has a traditional console-mounted automatic shifter with a standard PRNDL gate and mechanical shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (does not need to start)
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot—it's a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap directly to the left of the shifter base, near the center console side
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to remove the cap
  6. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Release the override and remove the tool; you may replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the ignition key cannot turn and the steering wheel will be locked. You must have at least enough 12V power to turn the key to ACC position. If the battery is completely dead, connect a jump pack or jumper cables to gain minimal power—you do not need to start the engine, just power the accessory position. Then follow the override procedure.
