🚨 2013 Ford Focus: Emergency Neutral

The 2013 Focus (third generation) has a console-mounted automatic shifter controlling the PowerShift dual-clutch transmission with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position using the push-button start (press START without pressing the brake pedal) or turn the key to ON if equipped
  3. Firmly press and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override: look for a small rectangular slot with a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the console trim
  5. Remove the cap carefully using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, press the shifter release button (if equipped) and move the shifter to Neutral
  8. Release the override and remove the tool; you may replace the cap

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the push-button start will not activate and electronic systems are dead. Connect a jump pack or jumper cables to the battery (under hood) to provide minimal power. You do not need to start the engine—just enough power to activate the ignition system to ON mode. Then use the shift lock override. If the 12V battery remains completely dead despite jump attempts, the shift lock remains engaged and the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed or with dollies under the front wheels.
