🚨 2019 Ford Focus: Emergency Neutral

The 2019 Ford Focus was not sold in North America; if this is an international-market vehicle with DCT, it uses a console-mounted PRNDL shifter with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Note: The Ford Focus was discontinued in North America after 2018. If you have a 2019 model, it is an international-market vehicle.
  2. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
  3. Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (do not start engine).
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot near the shifter base—typically a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap forward and to the left of the shifter.
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the plastic cap.
  6. Press down firmly on the override button/tab inside the slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle has no electrical power, the mechanical override should still function—apply sustained downward pressure on the override while shifting.
  8. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely; maintain brake pressure or use chocks.
Shift-lock override location
Expected to be a small rectangular slot with plastic cap near the shifter base, consistent with 2012-2018 design, but exact location should be verified in the owner's manual for international-market vehicles.
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override should be mechanical and function without battery power. Apply firm, sustained pressure on the override button while pulling the shifter. The steering wheel will remain locked without power, requiring the vehicle to be pushed straight or loaded onto a flatbed. Consult your regional owner's manual for specific guidance.
