🚨 2015 Ford Fusion: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Fusion Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shifter with push-button Park release and a monostable-style lever.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON/ACC position if battery power is available (hybrid system does not need to be READY).
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the 'P' button on top of the shifter to release Park, then move the shifter rearward to Neutral.
  5. If the brake-light switch has failed or 12V power is low, locate the shift lock override access: look for a small cap or cover on the right side of the shifter housing base, near the passenger side.
  6. Pry off the cap with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
  7. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly while attempting to press the 'P' button and move the shifter to Neutral.
  8. If successful, shift to Neutral and release the parking brake only when ready to move the vehicle.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter may not respond even with the override. If you have absolutely no power, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally (even with a portable jump pack for a few seconds) to provide enough voltage for the shifter solenoid to release. The steering wheel will remain locked without power. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be lifted or dollied for transport.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a hybrid vehicle with an electronically-controlled CVT. The vehicle MUST be towed with the front wheels OFF the ground (flatbed or wheel dollies required). Towing with the front wheels on the ground will cause severe damage to the transmission and electric drive system, even in Neutral. Even for short distances, flatbed towing is mandatory.
