⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if possible
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON/RUN (press START button without brake pedal, or insert key and turn to ON)
- Rotate the gear selector dial counterclockwise to N (neutral)
- If the shifter will not respond due to brake-light switch failure but 12V power is present, locate the shift lock override slot—typically a small rubber cap or cover near the base of the rotary dial or in the center console storage area
- Remove the cap and insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot, then press down while rotating the dial to N
- If the vehicle has NO 12V power at all, the electronic shifter will not operate—see 'No Power' notes below

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic rotary shifter cannot be moved. You MUST jump-start the 12V battery (small 12V battery in engine bay or under floor) to get enough power to shift to neutral. Once jumped, follow normal shift procedure. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground without neutral engaged.
