The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is chocked or on a flat surface
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition key to ON (or ACC)
- Depress the brake pedal fully
- Pull the column shifter down into Neutral (N)—one position down from Park
- If the shifter will not move out of Park due to a failed brake-light switch or shift interlock, locate the shift lock override slot on the column shroud near the shifter lever
- The override access is typically a small rectangular or round cap on the right side (driver's side) of the column shroud, just below or beside the shifter lever
- Pry off the cap with a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the slot and press/hold it down while pulling the shifter into Neutral

With zero electrical power
If the 12V battery is completely dead, turn the ignition key to ON if possible (this may give enough residual power to release the interlock). If the key will not turn or there is zero power, use the shift lock override as described. The column shifter is cable-actuated, so once the lock is overridden, the shifter should move mechanically into Neutral even without electrical power.
