🚨 2023 Ford Maverick: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Ford Maverick hybrid uses an electronic monostable (spring-return) shifter on the center console—a short lever that returns to center after each input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is applied if possible
- If 12V power is available, press the START button without pressing the brake pedal to enter accessory or ON mode (one or two presses, depending on configuration)
- Press the brake pedal and tap the shifter forward or press the neutral button (if equipped) to engage Neutral
- If the shifter will not respond due to brake-light switch failure, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rubber cap or trim piece at the front base of the shifter assembly (toward the dashboard side)
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shifter or press the neutral detent
- If the vehicle has NO 12V power at all, see 'No Power' notes below—the electronic shifter will NOT function

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic monostable shifter cannot operate. You MUST jump-start or charge the 12V battery (located under the rear seat on the hybrid Maverick) to restore enough power to shift into Neutral. Once the 12V system has power, follow the normal shift procedure. Do NOT attempt to tow with wheels on the ground without Neutral engaged.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
This is a hybrid with an electric CVT (eCVT) drivetrain. NEVER tow the Maverick Hybrid with the front wheels on the ground unless the transmission is in Neutral—doing so will cause severe damage to the hybrid transaxle. If you cannot restore 12V power to shift into Neutral, the vehicle MUST be towed on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground, or with the front wheels on a dolly. The Owner's Manual specifies flatbed-only towing if Neutral cannot be engaged.
