🚨 2024 Ford Maverick: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 Maverick hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted electronic shift lever with a push-button P-R-N-D-L pattern and electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition to ON or ACC position if 12V power is available (do not start the engine)
  3. Firmly depress and hold the brake pedal
  4. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap located on the right side of the shifter base
  5. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to pry off the cap covering the override slot
  6. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  8. Release the override tool and verify the vehicle is in Neutral (N indicator on dash)
  9. If hybrid system shows warnings about being in accessory mode, this is normal—Neutral is still achieved

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not respond and the shift lock cannot be overridden mechanically in most cases. You must provide 12V power (jump-start or connect a battery maintainer) to at least bring the vehicle to accessory mode, then follow the override procedure. Some technicians report success disconnecting the shift interlock connector under the console and manually releasing the lock mechanism, but this requires partial console disassembly and is not recommended for roadside use.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Maverick hybrid has a high-voltage battery and electric drive system. When towing, the driven wheels (front wheels on Maverick) must be OFF the ground to prevent damage to the electric motor/generator. Flatbed or trailer transport is strongly recommended. Do not attempt to push or tow with all wheels down—the regenerative system can create resistance and potential damage even in Neutral. The 12V battery controls all shift functions; the high-voltage system does not need to be in READY mode to shift to Neutral.
