🚨 1990 Ford Probe: Emergency Neutral

The 1990 Ford Probe (first generation) with automatic transmission uses a floor-mounted console shifter with mechanical shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (does not require battery power, just mechanical key position).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot on the left side of the shifter housing, near the base of the shifter lever.
  4. Remove the small rubber or plastic cover cap over the override slot.
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot.
  6. Press down firmly on the override release while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to N (neutral).
  7. If the shifter remains locked, ensure you are pressing deeply enough into the override slot while holding the shifter button.
Shift-lock override location
On the left side of the center console shifter housing, near the base of the shifter lever - a small rectangular slot covered by a rubber or plastic cap.
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override on the 1990 Probe is completely mechanical and does not require any electrical power. The ignition key should be in the ACC or ON position (mechanical position, not requiring battery power) to ensure the steering column is unlocked when moving the vehicle. The override mechanism physically releases the shift interlock pawl.
