⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may energize the shift interlock solenoid).
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover, located on the console immediately to the left of the shifter base, near the front.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the plastic cover.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, release the override and the car can roll freely.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override still functions. Turn the key to any position if possible (even with a dead battery, the mechanical key barrel can rotate). Use the override slot as described; no electrical power is required for the override itself.
