🚨 1992 Ford Probe: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Ford Probe uses a console-mounted floor shifter with a traditional PRNDL gate and a mechanical shift-lock interlock button on the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this may energize the shift interlock solenoid).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover, located on the console immediately to the left of the shifter base, near the front.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the plastic cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
  6. Once in Neutral, release the override and the car can roll freely.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override still functions. Turn the key to any position if possible (even with a dead battery, the mechanical key barrel can rotate). Use the override slot as described; no electrical power is required for the override itself.
