🚨 2004 Ford Ranger: Emergency Neutral
The 2004 Ford Ranger typically uses a column-mounted shifter lever with a mechanical shift-lock button on the handle (automatic transmission).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available.
- Locate the shift-lock override access: on the steering column, look for a small rectangular plastic cover or slot near the base of the shifter lever, usually on the lower right side of the column shroud.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to pry off the cover if present.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down or push inward (depending on the exact mechanism) while simultaneously pulling the shifter button and moving the shifter toward Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override still functions. The key must be in the ignition (any position, even with dead battery). The override mechanism is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power.
