🚨 2006 Ford Ranger: Emergency Neutral
The 2006 Ranger uses a traditional column-mounted shift lever with a cable-actuated shifter and mechanical shift interlock that prevents shifting out of Park without the brake pedal depressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ON/RUN position (engine does not need to start) to unlock the steering column
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the column shroud near the base of the shifter - it is typically a small rectangular opening with a protective cover
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to depress the override mechanism through the slot
- While holding the override depressed, move the shifter down through the gate to Neutral
- If the brake light switch has failed but you have battery power, you may also access and manually close the shift interlock solenoid circuit, though the override method is simpler
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot on the column shroud near the shifter base, usually on the right side; may have a small cover cap that pops off
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the steering column will remain locked. You must jump-start the vehicle or connect a battery booster to at least get ignition power (key to ON position) to unlock the column. Once the column is unlocked via ignition power, the mechanical shift lock override can be used as described above without needing the engine to run.
