The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ON or ACC position if any battery power remains—this may allow normal shifter operation if only the brake switch has failed.
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column, typically on the lower left side of the column shroud near the shifter lever base—it may be covered by a small plastic cap or plug.
- Remove the cover cap using a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
