🚨 1994 Ford Taurus: Emergency Neutral
The 1994 Taurus uses a traditional PRNDL column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock that engages when the key is not in the RUN position or the brake is not pressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or RUN position if you have any battery power remaining (this energizes the shift interlock solenoid).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not move and you have NO power or a failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column shroud, typically a small rectangular opening near the base of the shifter lever on the right side.
- Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter toward Neutral.
- Keep the tool pressed in the override slot until the shifter reaches Neutral, then release.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot in the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side of the column; may require removing a small plastic cover cap.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the key will not turn past ACC, so use the shift lock override slot with a screwdriver or key while pulling the shifter toward Neutral. The mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock completely.
