🚨 1994 Ford Taurus: Emergency Neutral

The 1994 Taurus uses a traditional PRNDL column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock that engages when the key is not in the RUN position or the brake is not pressed.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or RUN position if you have any battery power remaining (this energizes the shift interlock solenoid).
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  3. Move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
  4. If the shifter will not move and you have NO power or a failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column shroud, typically a small rectangular opening near the base of the shifter lever on the right side.
  5. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter toward Neutral.
  6. Keep the tool pressed in the override slot until the shifter reaches Neutral, then release.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot in the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, typically on the right side of the column; may require removing a small plastic cover cap.
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the key will not turn past ACC, so use the shift lock override slot with a screwdriver or key while pulling the shifter toward Neutral. The mechanical override bypasses the electronic interlock completely.
