🚨 1996 Ford Taurus: Emergency Neutral
The 1996 Taurus (third generation redesign) uses a column-mounted PRNDL shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch and ignition position.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Turn the ignition key to the RUN position if you have any battery power remaining.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the shift lever from Park to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not move due to no power or a failed brake switch, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small cap or slot on the column shroud near the shift lever base, typically on the right side.
- Pry off any cover cap if present, then insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot.
- Press the tool downward or inward (depending on mechanism orientation) while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward Neutral.
- Hold the override tool in position until the shifter is fully in Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Small access slot or removable cap on the steering column shroud near the base of the shift lever, generally on the right side; the 1996 redesign moved some components, so check both sides of the column if not immediately visible.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the ignition will not turn to RUN. Use the shift lock override mechanism with a screwdriver to manually release the interlock and shift to Neutral. The override is purely mechanical and does not require electrical power.
