🚨 2017 Ford Transit: Emergency Neutral
The 2017 Transit uses a column-mounted or floor-mounted console shifter depending on configuration; the 6-speed automatic typically uses a column shifter while some markets/configs may have console shifters.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible.
- For column shifter: Locate the shift lock override button or slot, which is typically a small covered opening near the base of the column shifter stalk, often on the left or lower side of the shroud.
- For console shifter: Locate the shift lock override slot near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the right or forward side of the shifter boot.
- Remove any cover or cap over the override access point using a small flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down or push in firmly.
- While holding the override engaged, move the shifter to Neutral (column: pull toward you and move to N; console: press release button and move to N).
- If the battery is completely dead and you cannot turn the ignition, you may need to provide minimal 12V power to unlock the steering and allow key rotation to ACC position.
Shift-lock override location
Column shifter: small covered slot near the base of the shifter stalk on the steering column, typically on the left or underside. Console shifter: near the base of the shifter, right or forward side of the boot. Exact location varies by shifter type.
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the ignition key may not turn and steering lock will engage. Provide jump-start power or connect 12V directly to battery terminals to restore minimal electrical function. The shift lock override will still be necessary even with power restored if the brake light switch has failed.
