🚨 1991 Geo Metro: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Geo Metro automatic uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a PRNDL gate and a push-button shift lock integrated into the shifter handle.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn ignition key to ACC or ON position if any battery power exists
  3. If no power or shift lock doesn't release, locate the shift lock override access on the left side of the shifter console base
  4. Remove any small trim cap if present using a flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While maintaining pressure on override, press the shifter button and move shifter to Neutral
  7. Release override once shifter is secured in Neutral
  8. Vehicle is now ready for towing or pushing
Shift-lock override location
Left side of shifter console base, near the shifter lever; may have a small snap-in cover cap
With zero electrical power
The mechanical override functions without any electrical power. With a completely dead battery, you will need to use the override slot. Note that the steering column lock may remain engaged without at least some voltage to turn the key to ACC.
