🚨 1992 Geo Metro: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Geo Metro automatic has a floor-mounted console shifter with PRNDL gate and button-release shift lock mechanism.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Engage parking brake and ensure wheels are properly chocked
  2. Attempt to turn ignition to ON or ACC position to release shift lock normally
  3. If shift lock does not release, look for the override slot on the left side of the shifter base console
  4. Pry off small cover cap if present using a trim tool or small screwdriver
  5. Insert a screwdriver or the ignition key into the override slot
  6. Push down firmly on the override mechanism while pressing the shifter button
  7. Move shifter to Neutral while maintaining pressure on override
  8. Once in Neutral, shifter will remain there without additional override pressure
  9. Vehicle can now be moved onto flatbed or towed with front wheels raised
