⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set parking brake firmly and chock wheels on level surface if possible
- Turn ignition key to ON or ACC to attempt normal shift lock release
- If battery is dead or shift lock won't release, locate the shift lock override access point near the shifter base
- The override is typically on the left side of the shifter console; remove any small trim cap if present
- Insert a small screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Apply firm downward pressure on the override while simultaneously pressing the shifter button
- Move the shifter into Neutral position while holding override depressed
- Remove tool once shifter is secured in Neutral
- Vehicle may now be pushed or loaded onto flatbed truck
Shift-lock override location
Left side of shifter console base near the lever; may have a small removable cap covering the slot
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is purely mechanical and will function with zero battery power. No electrical power is needed to use the override mechanism. Steering lock will remain engaged without power unless the key can be turned with residual voltage.
