🚨 1994 Geo Metro: Emergency Neutral

The 1994 Geo Metro automatic features a floor-mounted console shifter with PRNDL gate and button-actuated shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake firmly and chock wheels
  2. Attempt to turn ignition to ON or ACC position to release shift lock electronically
  3. If shift lock remains engaged, locate the mechanical override access on the console
  4. Look on the left side of the shifter base for a small slot or covered access point
  5. Remove trim cap if present by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
  6. Insert screwdriver or ignition key into the override slot
  7. Press down firmly on the override mechanism
  8. While maintaining override pressure, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
  9. Release override after shifter is in Neutral position
  10. Vehicle is ready for towing or flatbed loading
Shift-lock override location
Left side of shifter console base, adjacent to the shifter lever; commonly has a small snap-in cover cap
With zero electrical power
The mechanical override requires no electrical power and will function with a completely dead battery. This is a purely mechanical linkage bypass. Note that without battery power, the steering wheel lock will remain engaged unless the key can be turned to ACC with residual voltage.
