⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply parking brake firmly and chock wheels
- Attempt to turn ignition to ON or ACC position to release shift lock electronically
- If shift lock remains engaged, locate the mechanical override access on the console
- Look on the left side of the shifter base for a small slot or covered access point
- Remove trim cap if present by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
- Insert screwdriver or ignition key into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism
- While maintaining override pressure, press the shifter button and move to Neutral
- Release override after shifter is in Neutral position
- Vehicle is ready for towing or flatbed loading
Shift-lock override location
Left side of shifter console base, adjacent to the shifter lever; commonly has a small snap-in cover cap
With zero electrical power
The mechanical override requires no electrical power and will function with a completely dead battery. This is a purely mechanical linkage bypass. Note that without battery power, the steering wheel lock will remain engaged unless the key can be turned to ACC with residual voltage.
