🚨 1992 Geo Prizm: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Geo Prizm uses a conventional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any power remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the lower left side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter lever
  4. Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot (may require a small flathead screwdriver to pry gently)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
  7. If the vehicle has absolutely no power, the override should still function mechanically—continue applying pressure to the override while manipulating the shifter

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is a mechanical system that does not require electrical power. With the key in ACC position (no power needed to turn key), the override slot can be accessed and the shifter released manually. The steering wheel will be locked, but the transmission can still be shifted to Neutral.
