The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any power remaining
- Locate the shift lock override access—look for a small rectangular cap or slot near the base of the shifter on the console, typically on the left side or front of the shifter boot
- Remove the plastic cap covering the override slot (it may be labeled with a key symbol)
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press down or push forward on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
- If no power is available, the mechanical override should still function—maintain pressure on the override while manipulating the shifter
