The 1990 Geo Tracker with automatic transmission uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a simple mechanical shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked (especially important for this light SUV)
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any power remaining
- Press firmly on the brake pedal (this may help disengage the mechanical lock even without power to the brake switch)
- If the shifter will not release, locate the shift lock override access near the shifter—look for a small cap or slot on the console to the right or front of the shifter base
- Remove the plastic cap if present
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down while pressing the shifter button
- Move the shifter to Neutral while maintaining pressure on the override mechanism
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the shifter on the center console, typically to the right or forward of the shifter—early Trackers may have a simple mechanical lock without a distinct override slot
With zero electrical power
Early Tracker automatic shifters (1990) have relatively simple mechanical shift locks that may not require a separate override procedure. With no power, turn the key to ACC and attempt to shift normally while pressing the brake pedal—the mechanical linkage may release. If this fails, look for an override slot near the shifter base.
