🚨 1991 Geo Tracker: Emergency Neutral

The 1991 Geo Tracker with automatic transmission uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a mechanical shift lock and override release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any power remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the center console near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular cap or access hole, typically on the right side or directly in front of the shifter
  4. Remove the plastic cap covering the override (may require gentle prying with a small screwdriver)
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button and moving the lever to Neutral
  7. If no electrical power is available, the mechanical override should still function with sustained pressure
Shift-lock override location
On the center console near the shifter base, typically on the right side or forward of the shift boot, covered by a small plastic cap
With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is mechanical and operates without battery power. Turn the key to ACC position (no power required for key rotation) and use the override slot to manually release the shifter. The steering wheel will remain locked but the transmission can be shifted to Neutral for towing.
