🚨 1992 Geo Tracker: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 Geo Tracker with automatic transmission uses a floor-mounted console shifter with a shift lock solenoid and mechanical override release.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any power remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock override access on the center console near the shifter base—look for a small rectangular plastic cap, typically positioned to the right side or forward of the shifter boot
  4. Carefully remove or pry up the plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the override slot
  6. Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the lever to Neutral
  7. Maintain pressure on the override until the shifter is fully in Neutral position

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override is a mechanical system that functions without electrical power. With the ignition key turned to ACC position (which requires no battery power), access the override slot and manually release the shifter to Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked, but this does not prevent the transmission from being shifted.
