The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small removable cap or cover on the left side of the shifter base in the center console.
- Remove the cap using a flathead screwdriver or by prying gently with your fingers.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot beneath the cap.
- Press down or push the override mechanism while simultaneously attempting to move the shifter out of Park.
- If equipped with push-button shifter controls, you may need to press the Neutral button while holding the override.
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cap.

With zero electrical power
The 2023 Canyon's electronic shifter system is heavily dependent on electrical power. With complete power loss, even the shift lock override may not function. If the override does not release the shifter, the vehicle must be flatbedded or dollied with the rear wheels (2WD) or all wheels (4WD) off the ground. Attempting to force the shifter without power can damage the electronic transmission control module. Consider jump-starting the vehicle or providing temporary 12V power to enable the shift lock override.
