⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover directly forward of the shifter base on the driver's side
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the plastic cover
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If the shifter won't move with override alone, try turning ignition to ON while holding override
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled; chock wheels before releasing parking brake

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override should still work mechanically. Insert tool into override slot and hold down while moving shifter. If ignition lock prevents turning key to ACC, the shifter override will still function independently. You may need to apply more force to move the shifter without any electrical assist.
