⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with wheel chocks in place
- Attempt to power on the vehicle - press the brake and push the Power button
- If the 12V battery has any charge, enable Tow Mode: Press Power button, navigate to Vehicle Settings > Tow Mode on the center screen, and activate it
- If screen is responsive but shifter won't move, locate the shift lock override access - look for a small covered slot or access point near the shifter base on the console
- Remove any trim cover and insert a screwdriver or key into the override mechanism while attempting to shift to Neutral
- If 12V system is completely dead, you will likely need to jump-start the 12V battery (located under the hood) to power the electronics enough to select Neutral
- Once in Neutral with Tow Mode active, vehicle can be rolled at low speed for short distances
Shift-lock override location
Check near the base of the electronic shifter assembly for a covered access point; exact location may require removing small trim pieces around the shifter console
With zero electrical power
The Hummer EV has a standard 12V battery under the hood that powers all vehicle electronics. With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function. Jump-starting the 12V battery is usually required to get any shifter operation. The high-voltage EV battery does not help here - the 12V system must be functional. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheel dollies.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Hummer EV is extremely heavy (9,000+ lbs) and should be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels on dollies or lifted. Do NOT tow with two wheels on the ground even in Neutral - this can damage the electric drive units. Maximum roll distance in Neutral for loading should not exceed what's needed to get onto the flatbed (typically under 50 feet at under 3 mph). Enable Tow Mode through vehicle settings when possible before moving.
