🚨 2004 GMC Jimmy: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 GMC Jimmy uses a column-mounted automatic transmission shifter with a mechanical shift lock (carryover design from 2003).

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge (this may release the shift lock automatically).
  3. If the shift lock does not release or you have no power, locate the shift lock override slot on the lower left side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter.
  4. Remove the small plastic cover/cap over the override slot (it may pry off or slide out).
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and push down or inward while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral.
  6. Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.
  7. If the vehicle must be towed, ensure it remains in Neutral and that the transfer case (if 4WD) is in a tow-safe position per the owner's manual (2WD or Neutral for transfer case).

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the override slot becomes essential. The mechanical override will allow you to bypass the shift lock solenoid entirely. You may need a flashlight to locate the override slot. No electrical power is required for the override to function.
