🚨 2003 GMC Safari: Emergency Neutral

The 2003 GMC Safari uses a traditional column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift-lock override system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot: on the right side of the steering column shroud, look for a small rectangular cover or slot near the base of the shifter lever.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the vehicle key to press into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral.
  5. If the override access cover is present, gently pry it off first to expose the release button beneath.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift-lock override still functions. Insert tool into override slot and apply pressure while moving shifter. The override is purely mechanical and does not require battery power.
