🚨 2005 GMC Safari: Emergency Neutral
The 2005 GMC Safari uses a traditional column-mounted shifter lever with a mechanical shift lock release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels.
- Locate the shift lock release slot on the steering column, directly below and to the right of the shifter lever (usually covered by a small rectangular cap).
- Remove the cap by prying it gently with a flathead screwdriver or popping it off with your fingers.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver, ignition key, or similar tool into the shift lock release slot.
- Press the tool down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter lever toward you and moving it to Neutral.
- Keep the tool depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral position.
- If the vehicle has no electrical power, this mechanical override will still function—the shift lock is purely mechanical on this generation.

With zero electrical power
The shift lock override on the Safari is purely mechanical and does not require any electrical power to function. The mechanical release will work even with a completely dead battery.
