🚨 1990 GMC Sierra 1500: Emergency Neutral
The 1990 Sierra 1500 uses a simple column-mounted shifter with a mechanical shift lock that requires brake pedal depression.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ON position (or as far as it will turn if battery is completely dead)
- Locate the shift lock override release - on this generation it is typically a small slot or button on the right side of the column near the shifter lever base
- If you find a small access hole or slot, insert a small flathead screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into it
- Press firmly into the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button (if equipped) and moving the shifter toward Neutral
- On some 1990 models the shift lock may be simple enough that firm pressure on the shifter button alone with the key in ON position will release it even without brake pressure
- Move the shifter to Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Right side of the steering column near the shifter base, typically a small slot or button; some models may have minimal electronic shift lock and override may not be necessary
With zero electrical power
The 1990 Sierra has a relatively simple shift lock system compared to modern vehicles. With zero power and the key not turning, the shift lock may still be primarily mechanical. Try firm pressure on the shifter release button while pulling toward Neutral. If there is an override slot, it will be mechanical and should work without power. Many 1990 trucks have minimal electronic shift lock interlock, so you may be able to shift with key in any position and manual pressure alone.
