This GMT400 generation uses a column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift lock release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining (this may allow the shift lock to release normally)
- If the shifter won't move, locate the shift lock override slot on the right side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter lever
- Remove the small plastic cover cap over the override slot (may need to pry gently with a flathead screwdriver)
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press firmly inward
- While holding the override pressed, press the brake pedal (even with dead battery) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If completely dead, you may need to rotate the key to ACC while overriding the lock to mechanically unlock the shifter gate

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the mechanical shift lock override still functions. Use the override slot with a tool while attempting to move the shifter. The ignition key may need to be in the ACC position to allow the mechanical gate to release, even without electrical power. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to wiggle it while turning the key.
